NamRA tax registration in Namibia
How to register your business for tax and get a TIN, when VAT and PAYE apply, and how to stay in good standing from day one.
Every CC and company must register with the Namibia Revenue Agency (NamRA) after BIPA registration. Registration gives the business its Tax Identification Number (TIN).
Income tax registration comes first. VAT follows once turnover makes it compulsory (or earlier, by choice), and PAYE as soon as you pay a salary.
Banks, clients and every tender ask for your TIN, so register in the first week, not when someone asks for it.
What NamRA registration is, and why it comes straight after BIPA
BIPA registration gives your business a legal existence. NamRA registration gives it a tax identity. NamRA, established under the Namibia Revenue Agency Act of 2017, administers income tax, VAT, PAYE and customs. Your tax obligations run from when the business starts, not from when you get round to registering, so leaving it late only creates arrears.
The three registrations most businesses need
| Registration | Who needs it | When |
|---|---|---|
| Income tax (TIN) | Every CC and company | Straight after BIPA registration |
| VAT | Businesses whose taxable turnover passes the compulsory threshold; others may register voluntarily | Before turnover passes the threshold |
| PAYE (employer) | Any business that pays salaries, including a salary to an owner | Before the first salary is paid |
Voluntary VAT registration can make sense if most of your clients are VAT-registered businesses, because you can then claim back the VAT on your own costs. It also means more filing, so decide with your accountant.
What you need to register
- The BIPA registration certificate and founding documents
- ID or passport copies of the members or directors
- The business's physical and postal address and contact details
- The business's bank details, where available
- For a business owned from abroad: a resident Public Officer, who is NamRA's point of contact in Namibia
How registration works
- Complete NamRA's tax registration application for the business.
- Attach the BIPA documents and the owners' identification.
- NamRA processes the application and issues the TIN.
- Add VAT or PAYE registration when they apply.
- Diarise your filing dates. A registered business must file returns even in a year with no income.
After registration: staying in good standing
Registration is the easy part. To get a NamRA Good Standing certificate later, for a tender or a bank, every return that is due must be filed and paid. The most common trap is a quiet first year: no income, so no returns filed, and then a refused certificate when the first big opportunity arrives. File nil returns when there is nothing to declare. Our guide to Good Standing certificates covers what blocks one.
Common mistakes
- Waiting for the first invoice to register, then finding the client cannot pay without a TIN.
- Paying a salary before registering for PAYE.
- Letting turnover pass the VAT threshold without registering, which creates VAT you should have charged.
- Not filing in quiet periods. Missing nil returns still count as missing returns.

Frequently asked questions
How do I register for tax with NamRA?
Complete NamRA's tax registration application for the business, attach the BIPA registration documents and the owners' identification, and NamRA issues a Tax Identification Number (TIN). Chrimson does this for N$300.
What is a TIN number in Namibia?
The Tax Identification Number is the unique number NamRA gives every registered taxpayer. Your business uses it on tax returns, VAT invoices, tenders and bank applications.
Do I need to register for VAT in Namibia?
VAT registration is compulsory once your taxable turnover passes the threshold set in the VAT Act, and you must register before you pass it. Businesses below the threshold may register voluntarily, which can make sense when most clients are VAT-registered.
When must a business register for PAYE?
Before it pays its first salary, including a salary to an owner. PAYE is the income tax deducted from employees' pay and paid over to NamRA.
Does a company with no income still file tax returns?
Yes. A registered business must file its returns even when there is nothing to declare. Missing nil returns are the most common reason a NamRA Good Standing certificate is refused later.
Can a foreign-owned company register for tax in Namibia?
Yes. A business owned from abroad registers in the same way but needs a resident Public Officer as NamRA's point of contact in Namibia. Chrimson's Foreign Investor Package includes this.
